Observations on US political and economic issues by an American in Australia
When George W Bush was elected President, left wing commentators were apoplectic. They responded with a continuous string of vitriolic, personal attacks painting President Bush as stupid, bumbling, a puppet, and worse. These attacks continued for the next eight years, and accelerated when President Bush was re-elected. The same was true of Ronald Reagan.
In 2008 the shoe changed feet. With the election of Barack Obama, the right wing went ballistic, accusing him of everything from being a closet Muslim, to being born outside the US (as well as being a stupid, bumbling puppet).
I believe both sides have acted irresponsibly. Issues should be viewed on their merits. Legislation should be passed or defeated in order to improve the country as a whole. Instead, both the far left and the far right seem more concerned about scoring political points than in leaving the world a better place.
Of course, I am not such an idealist as to believe that politics will ever evolve to statesmanship. Nonetheless, I started this blog as an attempt to encourage people to think beyond the sound bite.
